Hot Rods and Motorcycles and Planes, Oh My!
![]()
Mark Twain once said, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco," and that goes double for late April. Even with the chilly temps and high winds, the wide array of custom cars, motorcycles and planes on hand made the 19th Annual Pacific Coast Dream Machines show, on April 26, enough to warm the cockles of anyone's heart.
Held at the Half Moon Bay Airport, in Half Moon Bay, Calif., the PCDM show has a long reputation of being one of the finest one-day shows on the West Coast. This year's show was no exception, as hundreds of hot rods, muscle cars, custom motorcycles and even restored farm equipment were on display. The PCDM show is unique because show goers can take plane rides to get an aerial view. There was even a blimp scheduled to appear and ferry about sightseers, but the high winds must have kept it grounded.
At the Pacific Coast Dream Machines, the cars (and motorcycles) are the stars, and with hundreds of vehicles signed up, there was plenty for the spectators to view. As with many shows lately, muscle cars and customs are adding their numbers to the normally '32-heavy shows like the PCDM. There was a killer collection of Camaros, Mustangs, a few Mopars and sweet sleds to round out the selections. From hot rods to streamlined lakes cars, from sleds to quirky European makes, there was plenty to see.
One important milestone this year marks the 50th anniversary of the now-defunct Half Moon Bay Drag Strip. Opened in 1959, Half Moon Bay Drag Strip was the idea of the late Jim McLennan, who, along with guys like official starter Andy Brizio, made the Half Moon Bay strip one of the finest on the West Coast. NHRA regulars such as Don Garlits routinely made the trek to Half Moon Bay to run against the best in the West. To honor the anniversary, a huge contingent of vintage slingshots and door slammers were on hand, many of which had actually run at the track.
Not only is the PCDM show one that any true enthusiast would attend, the quaint and beautiful area of Half Moon Bay makes this a show that shouldn't be missed. Next year's show promises to be even bigger, as it will be in its the 20th year. Make your plans (and reservations) now. We already have.
